Smackdown Defined

I realize that it took the British centuries to develop the English language to where it is today. On the other hand, we Americans have in just one generation pulled it apart to the point where it is largely unrecognizable, particularly to non-American English speakers. I guess that is why so many people say that we citizens of the US speak American.

Smackdown is a term that has invaded American culture, thanks to the “professional” wrestlers who use this term liberally. The Urban Dictionary (the only one attempting to define this term) says this about the word:

1) A contraction of two words (”smack” and “down”) popularized by WWE wrestler-turned-actor The Rock that refers to the inflicting of a beatdown of epic proportions upon “jabroni”s’ “candyasses”. Sometimes used in a bastardized form of Elizabethan English.

I’m not sure which Queen Elizabeth this person is referring to (wink*wink), but I am guessing neither one would understand or have understood this term. I digress.

A Personal StumbleQuest

There are two truisms that I adhere to [among others] that define how I approach my day, even my life:

  • If you aim at nothing, you will be certain to get it.
  • When starting any project aim big.

StumbleUponWhy play it safe? Why not do what you do with the utmost amount of enthusiasm? With that in mind I am rolling out my StumbleQuest 2008 Smackdown Campaign effective immediately. This campaign shall operate as follows:

My StumbleUpon mutual friends will be the targeted as beneficiaries of personal stumbles by me. This means that if we have “friended” each other, then I will do my best to stumble all of your pages at one time. If you have thousands of pages, I will spend as much as an hour in one sitting stumbling you. Please click on my profile to befriend me.

As I stumble your pages, I will leave comments on your blog (if allowable), thumb up as many pages as possible, and leave SU comments scattered throughout. Yes, I’ll probably actually read a bunch of your pages in entirety and leave a thoughtful comment behind as well.

I plan on finishing this quest by January 1, 2008. I have already stumbled several members pages all the way through so I will post their SU names as I update this thread.

Why This Quest?

For three reasons:

  • To produce goodwill in the form of sending a boatload of traffic your way.
  • To increase traffic across my URL.
  • To prove to everyone how useful a tool that StumbleUpon is.

How You Can Join In

If we are already mutual friends, then you don’t have to do anything. I’ll be getting to your pages between now and the end of the year. When I stumble you, I will send a note to your SU inbox upon completion (although it will be quite evident that I did visit your pages).

Even though I am currently near my 200 stumbler quota, I will be deleting people who haven’t “friended” me to make room for you. No need to say that you added me as I’ll check my mutual friends category to make certain who is on my list.

There are a handful of people who have befriended me and I haven’t reciprocated — if you are inactive on SU then that may be the reason why. In a few cases your sites might be highly objectionable, i.e. adult, athetist (with a strong anti-Christian bias), or all arcade. I can handle controversy and some games, but I need to be at least minimally interested in the pages that I stumble, right?

FYI: you aren’t required to do likewise for me, i.e., visit all of my pages ( I have plenty) but a stumble here, comment there, or an SU review would be most welcome.

Maybe You Will Launch Your Own Quest?

I really like StumbleUpon as I believe that most of the participants are kind, thoughtful, and extremely generous. I’m not looking for a “kumbaya” experience with everyone, but I have found that SU folks are eager to share their stumble love — a rising tide lifts all boats. With all of this in mind, won’t you consider implementing a similar type quest yourself?

Happy stumbling!
