Take Care: Someone May Want Your Domain Name

This morning I received notice from Tucows (a domain registrar) that a third party, XO Limited, is attempting to transfer one of my domains away from Wild West Domains, the registrar for that particular domain to Tucows. I acquired the domain in auction from Wild West Domains less than two weeks ago and was planning to begin developing the site today.

XO Limited: Barter Software

A little bit of research on my part revealed that the party who allegedly put in the transfer request is XO Limited, a New Zealand company who, “…is the largest single developer for the barter, credit union and alternative currency market world-wide.” I have no idea why the request was made or what the company wants to do with the domain, but I did not authorize a transfer nor am I interested in giving the domain to them. Sure, if they want to buy the domain I may be willing to discuss a sale.

Wild West DomainsNew Registrar, Still Domain Holder Of Record

The Tucows move (should I be foolish enough to accept it) would mean that I would still have control over the domain, but I wouldn’t be able to move it again for another sixty days thereafter. My plans for the site are to develop it and sell it, this week if possible.

Be Careful What You Accept

I don’t have time to spend on this matter further and am hoping that the request was an isolated incident. I will ignore the message, but I decided to share this information with you in case you get a request to transfer your domain(s) elsewhere. It could be an honest mistake on XO Limited’s part, but it does raise concern that requests like these could be missed or misunderstood by others who unwittingly transfer to another domain registrar.
