I’ll Be Scarce Around These Parts For Awhile

I just launched a new web site, JetEmployment, and am busy working on all of the behind-the-scenes stuff to make certain that it runs well. This is my first site where the blog is the site; no web pages the index.php page is what drives the site.

That being said I plan on devoting the bulk of my work over the next week to getting this site in order. In addition, I am bringing on two — maybe three — new clients so my hands are really full.

What a great problem to have!

The Life of a Corporate Hack

I am so glad that I am not beholden to any one company for the bulk of my business. I learned long ago that relying on one client can be a mistake, especially if that customer changes their business plan and decides to no longer use my services for whatever reason. Also, I am happy not to be employed by a specific company especially one that may be making controversial business decisions that annoy the heck out of me.

Bank of America Building; Seattle, WAThe person who is in charge of corporate communications at Bank of America must be able to stand with the company’s policies no matter how inane they may be. Yesterday, the Charlotte, NC-based mega-bank made an announcement that they would begin issuing credit cards to “undocumented workers” in a bid to secure their business. Already, the bank allows illegal aliens to open up checking accounts, now Bank of America is giving lawbreaking patrons an opportunity to establish credit.

Just think: terrorists whose desire is to do our country harm can open an account at Bank of America and give their associates access to a ready pool of funds as needed. No social security number is needed although some government-issued document is required to prove their identity. Let’s see you try to open an account with a social security number — it ain’t going to happen!

Some people in the Latino community are hailing Bank of America’s decision as a bold step forward. Other folks are remarking that this policy is making it easier for illegals to establish themselves in the US. I, for one, am sickened by Bank of America’s policy which was reiterated by one corporate wonk who said:

“This initiative lets customers build a solid credit history with a leading bank,” spokeswoman Betsy Weinberger said.

Well, Ms. Weinberger it also allows Bank of America to contribute to a problem that few in Washington, DC are taking seriously but is doing a great job of ticking off millions of Americans: illegal immigration.

Certainly, if you are a corporate hack then in order to be a good one you have to bite your tongue, put on a fixed smile, and parrot the company line every time a statement is required. Provided, that is, you disagree with your company’s decision. Et tu, Ms. Weinberger?

You Can Become A MyBlogLog Community Manager!

I heard about this job opportunity some time ago and yesterday I saw that MyBlogLog, the Yahoo! subsidiary based in San Francisco, is looking for an on-site community manager. Naturally, I would be a shoe-in for the position, but I don’t live in the Bay Area. Besides, I’m probably twice the age of whoever would be my boss. I’d probably get fired from MyBlogLog on my first day by referring to fellow staff members as kiddies too!

Although I won’t be applying for the position, I did respond to their blog notice by mentioning my interest in the job IF Yahoo! decided to move their base of operations to the Research Triangle Park area here in North Carolina. Heck, NC Governor Mike Easley has successfully wooed one of Google’s operations to Greensboro, so why not get Yahoo! to make the move too? Just throw a multi-million dollar incentive package Yahoo’s way and they just may take the bite.

In case you are considering applying for the job, you better hurry up and do so right away as the competition is likely to be brutal. You’ll be MyBlogLog’s 7th employee, so we’re talking about a small organization with a lot of potential and with the financial backing of Yahoo! to boot.
