Holi-dazed!

Working for oneself can be a terrific thing especially for the person who likes to control their own time, their own projects, their own business. After 3 1/2 years of self employment, I can emphatically say that I would never want to go back to the “ole days” of working for a company.

Self employment doesn’t mean you automatically take off every single holiday nor does it mean long weekends off throughout the summer months. It can for some folks, but for the majority of us it is business as usual when certain holidays pop up.

This coming Monday is Memorial Day and I will be at my computer working. I am doing this by choice as I plan on taking some time off during the work week at a later date; by working on Monday it will allow me to move some of my work around. Besides, there is no such thing as a “paid holiday” when it comes to self employment!

Then again, if I finish my work up quickly or if it is especially hot outside, I just may fire up the grille and cook a few burgers for my wife and kids just like so many of my fellow Americans will be doing.

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and don’t forget about the veterans and folks in service to our country. Thanks to those who defend freedom [and God] I can choose whether to work on a particular day or not. For that option I am most grateful.

Wet Squirrels and Writing Projects

Immediately outside of my front office window hanging at eye level from what must be a mulberry bush is a colorful hanging birdfeeder dish that I set up for the cardinals who frequent my area. Naturally, this easily accessible feeder is also regularly visited by squirrels despite my regularly leaving a copious amount of seeds on the ground for their consumption.

Most of the time I ignore the squirrels, resigning myself to knowing that I will get the occasional pair of cardinals stopping by with the remaining time given over to the furry-tailed rodent gang.

Recently, however, I have taken to fighting back. On warm days I prop open the window, grab a cold glass of water sitting on the nearby sill, and soak the squirrels when they stop by. Squirrels move fast, but on several occasions I have managed to see one run off with a fully drenched tail.

Before you contact the ASPCA to register your complaint, please realize that the water is cold, but not frigid. I have considered scalding the ‘lil boogers, but have decided I shouldn’t be so cruel. Besides, I really need to concentrate on completing my writing projects and not on vanquishing the nervy local squirrel population.

At least for now.

Latest Activity, Incoming Links

One of the cool features of WordPress by way of Technorati is the listing of all the latest activity on the site, particularly as pertains to incoming links.

Sometimes the list is blank while other times it is filled up with links back to sites that typically feature an article I wrote and submitted to one of the article directories. Most sites are generally average, with a few being little more than AdSense spam sites with an article tucked in here or there.

On the other hand, occassionally one of my articles gets picked up and disseminated through a site that is well organized, busy, and enjoyable to read. Yes it would be nice to see one’s writings regularly featured on several prominent sites. Once in awhile that happens, but not quite as often as I would like.
