VW, Proton Take A Look At Hooking Up

Stumble It!

Back in February 2006, I made mention of a strategic partnership between Volkswagen and Malaysian automaker Proton. As it turns out, Autoblog is reporting that the two automakers may be looking at creating an outright alliance, one where Volkswagen would become part owner of Proton.

The two automakers have been dancing around for several years, but it appears that Volkswagen will actually invest in Proton to the tune of $545 million and gain access to Proton’s assembly lines. Conceivably, VW vehicles could be built on Proton assembly lines and shipped to Japan tariff free. Thanks to an agreement between Japan and Malaysia, Volkswagen could circumvent onerous tariffs imposed on VW vehicles by the Japanese government.
