The Citroen C4 Picasso

The North American automotive market is noted for being highly competitive as well as being very lucrative, but that doesn’t mean that every car manufacturer has a presence here. Indeed, some automakers have exited the market finding it difficult to compete as well as to keep up with federal emissions and/or crash requirements.

Citroen is one of those automakers who has left, not because of being unwilling to keep up with federal requirements, rather as as result of low sales. As part of the Puegeot Group, the French automaker last marketed their vehicles in the U.S. in the 1980s; Puegeot itself pulled their own line of cars soon after the merger of AMC and Chrysler when the former company was at that time partly owned by Puegeot.

One Citroen model worth noting is the C4 Picasso, a 7 passenger multi purpose vehicle {MPV} now being sold in Europe. Powered by 1.8L or 2.0L gasoline engines or 1.6L or 2.0L diesel engines, the Picasso is both roomy and very fuel efficient. With a price tag that converts to just under $30,000 to as much as $42,000 the Picasso’s U.S. retail rate would be significantly higher than other vehicles in its class, most notably the Madza MPV.

As is typical of Citroen models, the C4 Picasso comes nicely equipped with stability control, seven airbags, and remote central locking. Top of the line models get automatic dual-zone climate control, MP3 compatible stereo, alarm, automatic headlights, self-levelling suspension and rear parking sensors.

  2. You are right about missing out on a good car! The previous model has enjoyed a huge following over here in the UK since it was first released. Its list price was low, sencond hand it was a bargain, and if you could look past some of the ‘little less than perfect’ build issues it was a good solid car. Levels of equipment was always better, if not as well made as its rivals, so all in all if the new one is anywhere near as succesful as the old one Citroen have done a very good job.

Just a shame you don’t look like your going to see it!

  4. CPP, we don’t have a single French model sold in the US any more. Peugeot and Renault have pulled out and aren’t likely to return. If Peugeot does return, I think they could get a toehold with Citroen before attempting anything else.
