Opulent hybrid model offers best in class fuel economy.

Last fall’s drop in gas prices had a correspondingly negative impact on hybrid vehicle sales as buyers welcomed cheaper fuel. Nevertheless, Lexus has released its updated RX crossover, available in both gas and hybrid versions, the latter now called the Lexus RX 450h.

Seating five, the RX series has been the segment leader since its debut in 1998, selling as many as 100,000 units annually in the U.S. The more recent hybrid variant offers class leading fuel economy now delivering 32 mpg city and 28 mpg highway despite gaining curb weight over the previous generation model.

Inside, the RX 450h offers a refined cabin featuring a dashboard with expansive lines and generous amounts of soft touch materials. Customers are given a choice of solid or two-tone color schemes for the dash, the latter offering a strikingly handsome appearance.

Among the top techie features for the RX is the optional Remote Touch controller, a joystick type interface with the Lexus navigation system. Located in the center console, the mouse-like device controls a pointer on the dashboard screen that allows the driver to click on various commands including weather, driving conditions, cabin comfort and more.

Cloth seating is standard and very comfortable with leather seating optional. This year’s model introduces length-adjustable seat cushions for front seat occupants, providing improved thigh support. Fit and finish is Lexus perfect — exquisitely detailed and elegant.

Powered by a 3.5L V-6 gas engine and sporting a pair of electric motors, the latest interpretation of the famed Lexus Hybrid System is the most efficient one yet. Upon starting the RX, electric only power is silently activated until power from the gas engine is needed. The hybrid system seamlessly shifts between electric and gas, automatically supplying the right mix of torque and horsepower. Car-like handling, good acceleration and firm braking are notable attributes of this crossover.

Storage is generous, with forty cubic feet in the cargo area that can be doubled with the rear seat folded while additional storage space can be gained via the roof rack. When properly outfitted the RX 450h can tow up to 3500 lbs.

Electronic stability control, front and side airbags and front passenger active head restraints are among the numerous safety features offered. This model routinely receives top honors for front and side impact safety ratings.

Available in front or all wheel drive, a fully optioned 2010 Lexus RX 450h retails for just under $50,000, a luxury vehicle that once again sets the standard for intelligent crossover design.
