Saab 9-5 Represents The Face of Things to Come
What a shame that General Motors is just weeks away from selling off Saab. At the Frankfurt Motor Show this week, Saab took the wraps off of its all new 9-5 sedan, presenting perhaps the nicest looking model since GM first acquired a stake in Saab twenty years ago. If that sedan plus the upcoming 9-4X crossover perform as well as hoped, then GM could leave Saab on an upswing, but unable to enjoy the fruit of its labors.
Clean, Fresh Styling
A larger, premium class sedan, the Saab 9-5 line has been updated to include cleaner, but bolder lines while incorporating the latest high tech features including adaptive cruise control; Bi-Xenon smart beam headlamps; adaptive chassis with real time damping control; parking assist; tri-zone air-conditioning; and an updated all wheel drive system.
The standard engine is a small 1.6L I4 turbo-charged motor which produces 182 horsepower while putting out 230 pound feet of torque. The engine also features an “overboost” function which raises torque to 266 pound feet for just five seconds, long enough to help the sedan pass slower moving traffic. Optionally, a 2.0L turbo I4 is available which can run on both straight gasoline and E85 blend.
A 2.8L turbo V6 provides maximum power while an optional 2.0L diesel engine provides maximum fuel economy. Four engine choices allow Saab to reach a broader market – something the brand will need as it competes against some of Europe’s finest sedans. All transmission choices available will be six-speed.
A Coupe Like Appearance
The face of the 9-5 is familiar though the most noticeable differences can be found in the shape of the headlamps as well as the windshield. Indeed, the blackened A Pillar makes the windshield appear as it it is wrapping around to the sides. The rear deck is curved, giving the sedan a more coupe like appearance.
Interior changes for the 9-5 includes deep center console with recessed main dials including what Saab calls a rolling “altimeter” speed read out, as a means to point to the brand’s aviation heritage. An optional head up display can be viewed in the windshield, with read outs in Saab’s signature color green. A start/stop button is now standard and is located between the front seats adjacent to the gear shifter, long a Saab layout feature.
Premium Sound Storage & Display
Cabin amenities include a rear entertainment system with a unit built into the back of the center console with fold-out viewing screens installed in front seat backs. An eight inch touchscreen navigation system with hard disk storage for map data and 10 GB of music file storage along with the requisite USB and Aux ports are sure to please occupants.
The all new 2010 model will be available to European and North American customers during the first half of next year.
