Chevrolet Volt

Imagine for a moment that you are employed by General Motors, in either the US or in Canada, that is. The news brought forth over the past several months has been quite grim, forcing you to ponder what the future of the company is, never mind your personal job prospects a month or more down the line.

If you’re an assembly line worker, your unease is made even more apparent when the very models you produce are not much in demand. Trucks, SUVs, and some cars are just not selling — your factory could be closed,  your financial livelihood in jeopardy. All those give backs your union made over the past several years just may not have been enough.

If you’re part of the company’s office staff, you are seeing up close and personal that GM is bleeding red ink, made much worse by gas prices that are staying above $4 per gallon. The Chevy Malibu and some other models are selling briskly, but not enough to offset all of the other losses. Quite suddenly, you’re filled with the realization that the game has shifted and GM now finds itself deep in its own territory, third and very long. A big play is needed; time is quickly running out.

A Big Play On The Way?

Well, it looks like GM has a big play being readied, not something that will bring forth a needed score, but an event which could break the gloominess, stir the hearts of GM faithful, and shut up critics who are eager to pick the meat off of the company’s bones.

According to several online sources, including Reuters, GM may reveal a production version of the Chevrolet Volt this September just as the company marks the 100th anniversary of its founding. Bruised by dismal sales, a loss of market share, and a historic drop in its stock value, GM is eager to send a message that the company still has a lot of fight left, a game changing play to kick start a rally the General desperately needs.

September 2008 Reveal Planned

When the Volt makes its debut around the time of its September 16th anniversary, GM is expected to announce the all-important supplier for the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery. South Korea’s LG Chem is believed to be the front runner, but Continental AG of Germany is also in the mix. Even with the early debut, it’ll still be two more years before the Chevrolet Volt hits showrooms.

If anything, GM needs a morale booster and the Chevrolet Volt is its version of NASA’s 1960-era moon shot program. Should GM succeed, all the honor will go to it; if the company fails, then much like the Soviet Union the company’s Volt project will simply become a footnote, perhaps even unraveling what was once a mighty global automaker.

  6. Uncle B, are you suggesting that the lithium-ion battery presents a great danger? I’ve thought so myself but wonder if the technology being developed by LG Chem and Continental AG will prevent that.

HID, I certainly hope so! Toyota was originally opposed to this technology, but they have since declared that they are in the race as is Nissan. This may be one race where everyone is a winner.
