More Power, Improved Fuel Economy for 2009 Fusion

Ford’s decision to develop the Fusion and her sister models from Mercury and Lincoln is probably one of the best moves that the Ford Motor Company Ford Fusionhas made during this decade. Based on the Mazda6 platform, the Ford Fusion is a high quality mid-sized car, offering a compelling alternative to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, which are the leaders in the mid-size car category.

For 2009, the Fusion will get a more powerful yet more fuel efficient four cylinder engine and that engine will be paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission. The current base engine has a Ford Fusiondisplacement of 2.3L with the new engine sized at 2.5L, but with variable valve timing (VVT).

The new engine is the same one that will be available in the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner beginning in 2009. Ford believes that once testing has been completed, the Fusion will have “best in class” fuel economy, which would be a plus as $4 per gallon gasoline is a virtual given.

Ford will be introducing a hybrid version of the Fusion for 2009 as well. Look for interior and exterior modifications to complete this mid-cycle update.
