This coming Monday Mitsubishi will officially debut the 2010 Lancer Sportback, a five-door version of its popular compact model. First introduced in 1973, the Lancer is perhaps the most well known of all Mitsubishi models with young drivers drawn to the sporty appeal high end versions such as the Lancer Evolution.

Powered by a 2.4L I4 engine producing 168 hp and 167 lb.-ft of torque, the standard model will retail for $19,190 and be paired with a five-speed manual transmission.  Optionally, buyers cans choose to pair the engine with a six-speed CVT automatic transmission that includes magnesium paddle shifters, a $1000 increase in the Sportback’s base price.

2010 Lancer Sportback Ralliart

Two models will be sold — the GTS and the Ralliart. The Ralliart will be powered by a 2.0-liter MIVEC turbocharged engine that pumps out 237 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. All wheel drive and an active center differential is standard with this top of the line model which shares the same six-speed Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) and magnesium paddle shifters found in the Lancer Evolution. The Ralliart will retail for $27,590.

The Sportback is  just slightly longer than the sedan, but offers far more cargo carrying room. Thanks to a 60/40 splitback rear seat, storage capacity can easily be increased while the GTS offers a special feature which lowers the floor by three inches allowing hard to fit items to squeeze in.

Amazing Sound, Top Notch Safety Features

The Ralliart offers many of the same amenities found in the Lancer Evolution including a premium audio system with in-dash CD changer and MP3 capability as well as Sirius Satellite Radio.

Safety features found across the entire Lancer line include advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system with occupant sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags, plus a driver’s knee air bag. Stability control is standard as is an anti-theft system with immobilizer key. High intensity discharge (HID) headlamps is an optional feature found in touring packages.

A Sales Boost For Mitsubishi?

The arrival of the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback comes as the Japanese automaker battles through the stiffest downturn the automaker has seen since it began to sell cars in the US apart from its original partner, Chrysler Corporation, in the 1980s. Year to date, Mitsubishi’s US sales are down by just over 50%, one of the worst performances by any full line manufacturer this year.
