Make Friends Fast With Mobile Chevy Wi-Fi
Now there is one more reason to cozy up to your Chevy friends: Autonet Mobile is working with Chevrolet dealers to make its rolling wi-fi system available on select models. Installed at the dealership, equipped Chevy models will feature internet access for passengers as well as supply online connectivity within a 150 foot radius of the vehicle.
This means that if people find out that your vehicle is a rolling hot spot you’ll become a fan favorite not so much for your ride but for your internet access.
7 Chevy Models
Autonet Mobile announced earlier this week that seven Chevy models – Equinox, Traverse, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, and Express – can be fitted with its technology, the only company currently producing wi-fi systems for cars. The product is called Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile; check with your dealer for more information.
Of course, you’re discouraged from using this product while driving, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pull over and check your email or send out a tweet and then drive on. Your passengers, however, can access the internet at any time which means that your son or daughter can keep up with their Facebook friends as you’re traveling down the interstate.
No Special Software
According to Autonet Mobile, their system requires no special software and achieves speeds up to 1.5 mbps. It uses TRU Technology to maintain Internet connections over the 3G network while the vehicle is in motion, allowing uninterrupted streaming of videos and more. Additional docking stations are available, enabling customers to easily move the router from vehicle to vehicle.
Through Dec. 31, Chevrolet Wi-Fi is available for $199 ($399 retail price, less $200 mail-in rebate with two-year service agreement). Customers pay a $29/month access fee with no roaming, overage, or surcharges assessed.
The only request I make from wi-fi equipped Chevy owners is this one: place a sticker on your car saying “free wi-fi access” so that I can follow you around.

This idea sounds great in theory, but the $29 a month fee concerns me. Currently most people pay $29 for home internet and another $29 for internet on their phone. One has to wonder how many devices people will be willing to pay thirty bucks a month for. Someone needs how to figure out how I can pay $30 a month for internet, and then use it across all of my devices (be it my car, phone, or computer). Granted, I give Chevy credit for going for it. Sooner or later vehicle based wi-fi is inevitable.

Buffalo, I agree. This service may be pricey for some, but it also gives GM the chance to figure a way on how to bundle this service with OnStar, at least as a price package. Likely, prices will decrease over time as people see the advantage of having a rolling wi-fi service available to them too.
