Toyota’s 2008 Domination Is Scrutinized

The Toyota Motor Company has made great strides this year in motorsports, dominating several NASCAR races and thrusting the automaker to the top of the race car heap, ahead of rivals Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge. However, a recently revealed scandal involving Joe Gibbs Racing is focusing negative attention Toyota’s way.

According to published reports, two Toyotas (#20 and #18) had shims placed behind the accelerator pedals to prevent them from depressing fully. As a result, the reading on the chassis dyno would appear lower than the peak horsepower the engine is capable of producing.

NASCAR Rule Changes Affect Toyota Drivers

Recently, NASCAR made a rule change that impacted Toyota engines only forcing race teams which use Toyota cars to drop the horsepower ratings to be in line with Dodge, Chevrolet, and Ford numbers. Though details of the scandal are still unfolding, it is believed that the cars were tampered with as a result of the recently implemented restrictions.

Quoting, Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs, “If this alleged incident proves true, it goes against everything we stand for as an organization. We will take full responsibility and accept any penalties NASCAR levies against us. We will also investigate internally how this incident took place and who was involved and make whatever decisions are necessary to ensure that this kind of situation never happens again. The expectations we set for everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing begins with me, and I personally apologize to NASCAR, our partners and our fans for the negative light this situation has cast upon all of us.”

Carfax 250 Nationwide Series

The infractions were uncovered following this past Saturday’s Carfax 250 Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway. NASCAR is expected to hand down steep penalties against Joe Gibbs Racing once they complete their investigation later this week.
