Is A Packard Revival Feasible?
America’s Ultra Luxury Brand
One of the most storied names in American automotive history is Packard, an upscale brand that traces its history back to 1899. For decades, motorists enjoyed riding in one of the finest automobiles available, a car known as much for its advanced engineering accomplishments as well as for its luxury.
In 1958, the last Packard rolled off of the assembly line, forever ending a brand that is still much
remembered by today’s senior citizens, but forgotten by all except the avid automotive enthusiast.
Packard Is For Sale
The Packard name has never gone away, the rights having been sold through the years with Roy and Barbara Gullickson of Canada buying them thirteen years ago. Since that time, a prototype all-new Packard has been built, a super luxury car along the lines of Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Now, the owners want to sell Packard to someone who’d be interested in reviving the brand and bringing the prototype to market.
According to Reuters, “There’s a certain aura to the name and a good bit of nostalgia,” said Roy Gullickson, Packard Motor Car Co. president, who acquired the rights to the name in 1995. “We sure would like to see someone bring the Packard name back into the marketplace.”
The 21st Century Packard Twelve
Regarding the proposed Packard Twelve mode (pictured)l, it would be the only ultra luxury automobile manufactured in the United States. With a V-12, 525 cubic inch aluminum engine, all wheel drive, and aluminum intensive construction, the owners say that this combination of features would result in superior performance and handling. The new models would be “full size with moderately conservative, distinctive styling incorporating several traditional Packard elements. The Packard line will consist of a sedan, a coupe, and a convertible.”
If the Packard is sold to new owners and a production model built, look for only a maximum of one hundred cars annually to be made. Quite rare, the cars would be priced accordingly, probably snapped up by Jay Leno and others with the wealth to drive a marque of this caliber.
