Ford’s decision not to stick a V8 engine underneath the hood of its all-new Lincoln MKS has met with some criticism from automotive analysts. Reasoning that having a V8 option would allow the Lincoln to compete effectively against its large luxury car rivals, the decision by Blue Oval management to go strictly with a V6 looked like a bad one many months ago.

My, how much things have changed!

No V8, Just A V6

Back then, no one was predicting the big run up in gas prices experienced through the first six months of this year, an increase that has whacked the sales of all vehicles powered by V8s. Instead, customers are flocking to V6 and smaller engines, trying to squeeze a few more miles to the gallon out of whatever car suits them.

Though the Lincoln MKS didn’t debut until this past June, having a smaller engine probably kept its tepid initial sales from completely bombing.

Replacement For Displacement

But, Ford isn’t settling with the notion that customers will be happy with a normally aspirated V6 and is tapping Honeywell to supply twin-turbo power for its turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine, giving it the power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a V6. The modified engine will produce a whopping 340 lb. ft of torque, matching what Ford’s 4.6L V8 can do.

“It’s fitting that Ford asked Honeywell, the world’s largest and most innovative turbo maker in the world, to help launch the first truly efficient downsized turbocharged gasoline engine in the US,” said Adriane Brown, President and CEO, Honeywell Transportation Systems. “Honeywell is proud to partner with Ford on its first EcoBoost engine, and to give American drivers a fuel-efficient, lower emitting vehicle that doesn’t compromise on performance.”

9 Million Turbochargers Annually And Rising

Honeywell is a big supplier of turbochargers, producing more than nine million units annually. The company provides boost for a variety of automotive makes around the world and will be having a hand in other EcoBoost projects for Ford including a turbocharged engine for the Ford Fusion.

At present, the turbocharger market covers 30% of vehicles manufactured today with Honeywell predicting that this figure will rise to 38% as “automakers look to help increase fuel-efficiency and reduce harmful exhaust emissions without sacrificing performance.”
