Honda FCX Clarity Is A Reality, Sort Of

Stumble It!

Honda FCX Clarity

Honda’s fuel cell vehicle, dubbed the FCX Clarity, will be hitting the market in July, but only to a limited number of customers. Honda will be leasing 200 of their hydrogen-powered vehicles over the next three years to customers in Japan and the US.

Honda Leases The FCX Clarity For $600 Per Month

From the start, the Honda FCX Clarity will be offered in California only as Honda takes advantage of a network of hydrogen fueling stations currently being established across the Golden State. The vehicle, which has a top speed of 105 miles per hour, will be leased to customers for $600 a month.

Mass production of the FCX Clarity is still a decade or more away as Honda gauges consumer demand, improves technology, and is able to build the car at a price consumers can afford.

Hollywood Celebs To Take Initial Delivery

According to Honda, film producer Ron Yerxa will take delivery of the first FCX Clarity in July. The remaining four early adopters for Honda’s next-generation fuel cell vehicle are author and actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her filmmaker husband Christopher Guest; business owner and car enthusiast Jim Salomon; actress Laura Harris; and Jon Spallino, already the world’s first retail fuel cell vehicle customer, who has been leasing the current generation FCX since 2005. Yerxa, Harris and Spallino attended a recent ceremony in Japan marking the car’s introduction.

What Is The Honda FCX Clarity?

Honda’s FCX Clarity is a four passenger vehicle with a driving range of about 280 miles. The car’s only emission is water, but the electric engine in the fuel cell does need to be recharged. In fuel mileage terms, the FCX Clarity is estimated to get about 74 mpg, based on 2008 EPA estimates.

The FCX Clarity made its debut at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Show as a concept vehicle.
