Full Sized Hyundai Slated For 2009 Production
Like many other Asian automakers, the cars that Hyundai sells in Korea are often different from the ones sold in the North American market. A prime example of this difference is the Hyundai Equus, a
full-sized luxury car that would compete against Cadillac, Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus if it were sold in the US and Canada.
This same model is slated for a major overhaul, one that will be derived from the platform underpinning the all-new Genesis sedan, at least that is the opinion of Left Lane News which relayed that information from Hyundai-Blog which published the news this past Sunday. Both sites are offering a teaser photograph of the car, a silhouette side angle shot that offers a hint of what is to come.
Three Big V8s For The Biggest Hyundai
As many as three V8 engines will be available for the model which may be designated as a stretched Genesis or receive its own name when it eventually is shipped abroad. Engines of 4.6L, 5.0L and 5.5L producing in the neighborhood of 400 hp will power the car which could also include cylinder deactivation and perhaps a supercharger.
Hyundai Going Further Upmarket
Hyundai is taking a big chance by selling its newest upmarket vehicles under the Hyundai brand, a common occurrence for automakers outside of the US, but often viewed as a mistake by consumers who prefer not to buy an expensive model in a showroom selling ars which cost under $15,000. Toyota (Lexus), Honda (Acura), and Nissan (Infiniti) have all successfully launched separate brands while Hyundai plans on expanding its brand to include everything from basic transportation to luxury offerings.
After a poor start in January, Hyundai’s US sales have been increasing thanks to the automaker having a good selection of fuel thrifty and cheaply priced cars available for consumers. Sales for the year are down 2% compared to 2007, but July’s sales were up by 6.5% as Hyundai sold more than 40,000 units during that month. According to Hyundai, the mid-sized Sonata and the compact Elantra are the automaker’s two top selling models in the American market.
