EcoBoost Slated For I4 Engines Too

Ford's EcoBoost engine technology is set to debut in 2009, when the Lincoln MKS gets this hypercharged V-6 powerplant. Now, Ford is saying that work on an I4 EcoBoost engine is in progress a 2.0L engine that will most likely power the Ford Fusion. Look for a 1.4L engine to follow as well.
Two of the three Detroit automakers are experiencing hard times these days, needing a federal cash infusion to ensure that they’ll survive into the new year.
Ford, on the other hand, says they have enough money on hand to make it through 2009, a position that may only get better thanks to new products and technology being offered.
For 2009, the all-new F-Series has made its debut and thanks to lower gas prices is selling quite well. Ford recently added a second shift at its Kansas City Production Plant to keep up with demand, a strong sign that this segment is beginning to rebound.
This Spring, several 2010 models will be out including the next generation Ford Mustang and its midsize triplets — the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and the Lincoln MKZ. This latter model will also sport a hybrid version, achieving a whopping 39 mpg for city driving.
Come summer, the new Lincoln MKT crossover will debut and about the same time the Lincoln MKS will get the engine everyone has been waiting for: EcoBoost.
EcoBoost is Ford proprietary technology which helps an engine squeeze out more power without using up additional fuel. The V-6 powerplant slated for the MKS will have power comparable to a V-8 engine, while burning the same amount of fuel for a V-6. Ford plans to place this engine in as many as 500,000 vehicles annually over the coming years, a significant part of the company’s strategy to field a fuel efficient car fleet.
Now, word is out that this same technology will find its way in an I4 engine, namely a 2.0L engine slated to power the Ford Fusion. In addition, an even smaller engine, a 1.4L, will also be worked up for EcoBoost, giving Ford an important edge over its competition.
With new, smaller models on their way, class leading hybrid technology coming to the Ford Fusion and EcoBoost in the mix, Ford suddenly puts General Motors and Chrysler in their rear view mirror. Come to think of it, they’ll be giving Toyota and Honda a lot to be concerned about as well.
