Easy Fuel: Innovative or Silly Engineering?
For the record, I haven’t come across a single Ford product with an Easy Fuel gas tank, then again it has been awhile since I last drove a Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicle.
If you haven’t heard of Easy Fuel, you might confuse this feature with Flex Fuel, which is the ability for some cars to run on E85 fuel (ethanol) or straight gasoline . Easy Fuel isn’t anything like that,
rather it is a capless fuel-filler system that comes with an integrated spring-loaded flapper door that allows customers to simply insert the fuel nozzle into the tank to fill up – no screw cap is required.
Never Leave Your Gas Cap Behind Again
Yes, you heard it here: If you’re prone to leaving your gas cap behind, then Easy Fuel is right for you. Which brings me to the next question: don’t all new cars come with gas caps which are attached to the side of the vehicle with a rubber gasket? I know that my older vehicles, a Dodge and a Toyota do, which keeps me from ever forgetting to screw the cap back on.
Good For The Environment
But, with all innovations there is usually some other feature that isn’t apparent and in the case of Easy Fuel we know that it automatically seals shut once the nozzle has been removed. Ford says that this move limits the emission of evaporative vapors into the environment. Who knew?
What’s more, Ford’s own survey revealed that 75% of the women and 67% of the men surveyed though that Easy Fuel would be a nice feature to have, so it is now standard on all Ford Explorer, Lincoln MKS, and Ford Flex vehicles. Within the next five years Easy Fuel will be standard across Ford’s entire product line.
Yeah, What She Said
“Easy Fuel was a very popular feature in our customer research among all vehicle segments,” said Pamela Wylie, Ford technology planning manager. “When we considered the value this innovation added to our vehicles for our customers, it made business sense to implement it across our product lines.”
There you have it.
