Coskata and GM Announce E-Fuel Partnership
One of the big newsmaking events for Sunday was the announcement by General Motors that they will be partnering with Coskata, an Illinois-based start up that promises to
develop cellulosic ethanol for less than $1.00 per gallon. Instead of using corn or other grain based material, Coskata plans on using a variety of recyclable materials with the exception of glass and metal. These materials can include most household waste products and include discarded rubber tires.
Coskata says that they can develop ethanol using less than one gallon of water for each gallon of ethanol. As a biology-based renewable energy company, Coskata says that they have the patents and funding in place to get a plant up and running before the year ends. Bill Roe from Coskata and investor Vinod Knosla were introduced by Rick Wagoner who also stood with these men after the press conferenced ended to take reporters’ questions.
Ethanol has been a difficult product to bring to the market cheaply, but it does have the promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 84%. Wagoner called the initiative, “a better way to make ethanol.” GM Vice Chairman Rick Lutz mentioned, in a separate interview, that GM took a small amount of equity in Coskata to help the company get going.
