Compact Cadillac Debuts at Detroit Auto Show

The Cadillac ATS will be making its official debut at the North American International Auto Show this January in Detroit. This compact sedan will slot below the CTS line and take on Europe’s finest small luxury cars including the Audi A4 and BMW’s 3-Series. A 3.6-liter V-6 engine will be standard, but Cadillac will also offer a 2.0-liter turbocharged four that makes 270 horsepower.

European Competitors

Cadillac says that the ATS’ high performance turbocharged inline four will produce more power for its size than engines used by Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW. Direct injection will also enhance this engine which produces 260 foot-pounds of torque in a torque curve that ranges from 1,500 rpm to 5,800 rpm.

“This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan,” said Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of Global Marketing. “The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive.”

Engine Highlights

Highlights of the Cadillac engine include a direct-injection twin-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing; twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler; forged-steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system; and a two-stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling. Friction has been reduced by 16 percent, allowing this engine to deliver power more efficiently.

“The 2.0T is one of the most advanced and efficient engines of its kind, and contributes to the ATS’s exceptional balance of performance and great fuel efficiency,” said Mike Anderson, chief engineer for the 2.0T engine.

By comparison, the ATS’ standard 3.6-liter engine produces just over 300 horsepower. European models will also be outfitted with diesel engines, an engine option that won’t be made available for North American Cadillac fans at least for now.

Cadillac Brand

The Cadillac ATS will follow the Cadillac XTS to the market next summer, models that will fill important holes in the Cadillac line up. In recent months, Cadillac has had to rely upon just three product lines: its SRX crossover, the CTS and its Escalade SUV line for sales as it discontinued two of its larger models: the DTS and STS sedans. Sales fell in November 2011, but are still up for the year. Both new models are expected to help Cadillac gain additional traction in the highly competitive luxury car market, enabling GM’s pinnacle brand to take on BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus more effectively.

Skyactiv Technology comes to Mazda’s small crossover.

Say good-bye to the Mazda Tribute and say hello to the Mazda CX-5, the latter representing this Japanese automaker’s latest attempt to compete in the “cute ute” segment. Small crossover SUVs are popular, but the Tribute is dated, a rebadged Ford Escape that just hasn’t been able to keep up with the Escape and its environmentally-friendly seats, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 in this competitive segment.

As Ford unveils its new Escape, Mazda has done likewise with its newest model. Unlike the Tribute, the CX-5 was developed separately from Ford although both have been introduced at the same time. Some platform collaboration has continued, but the sheetmetal, powertrains, interiors and everything else is unique to each brand.

L.A. Debut

The backdrop for the CX-5′s introduction was the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. Indeed, if you want to view this vehicle yourself, you can stop by the Los Angeles Convention Center downtown through November 27 to gauge what this vehicle is all about. The show is open all throughout Thanksgiving weekend, so finish your turkey early of skip the Black Friday madness and head over to the convention center.

The 2013 CX-5 features Mazda’s SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. Yes, it is written all in caps, but to avoid annoying subsequent mentions of Skyactive Technology will be only be in title case. Perhaps Mazda wants to emphasize that its current crop of vehicles is far different from what has recently been offered, thus the “shout out” which every copywriter knows makes for bad form.

In any case, we’re not here to edit Mazda’s website, rather to tell you about this five passenger vehicle. And you know what? There is certainly a lot to say.

Skyactive Technology

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is powered by a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine. And that is where Skyactiv comes in. Mazda describes Skyactiv as “…an all-encompassing, deeply embedded philosophy that obtaining more power, torque and miles per gallon does not need to come at the expense of fuel economy, design and safety.” The first instance of its use was in the Mazda3 and now it comes to the Mazda CX-5.

Notably, this engine has the highest compression ratio of any mass produced production car, coming in a ratio of 13.0-to-1. Output of 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and torque measured at 150 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm denotes how much power is in this engine which redlines at 6,500 rpm. This engine is paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The CX-5 has a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

Fuel economy is superior to what is found in this class with the front-wheel-drive manual coming in at an estimated 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway. For the FWD automatic, you’ll see 26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway. The AWD, available only in automatic, should return 25 mpg city, 30 mpg highway according to Auto Tribute.

CX-5 Dimensions

Mazda has placed the CX-5 on a 106.3 inch wheelbase, the longest in this segment. Standard 17-inch rubber can be upgraded to 19-inch wheels. Mazda is making a lot of noise about this vehicle’s interior room, noting that front head and legroom is excellent and pointing to the rear seat’s 40/20/40 seating configuration which allows for two or three passengers. This also allows for creative ways to house cargo. Further spec details will be forthcoming.

Cabin amenities include Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, iPod audio playback and a 9-speaker Bose sound system. You also get HD RadioTM Technology, a subscription-free digital AM and FM broadcast radio service and on-screen information with additional programming choices via HD2 and HD3 channels.

TomTom Technology

The CUV also makes use of TomTom technology-based navigation system, which features premium North American maps, advanced lane guidance, intuitive voice recognition and real-time traffic. In addition, USB and auxiliary jack connections are located in the center console storage bin and can be accessed via the infotainment touch screen.

Pricing and additional package details will be announced in 2012 just before this vehicle goes on sale. And, yes, a diesel version is likely to follow notes Susanna Schick.

Large crossover offers more 2nd and 3rd row seating room than Escalade.

Infiniti has the Cadillac Escalade in its crosshairs. Nissan’s luxury division has introduced its full-sized JX, a 7-passenger crossover SUV that is powered by a 24-valve V-6 engine. This new model was introduced this week at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and will retail from $40,450.

Los Angeles may have been the launching point for the Infiniti JX, but this luxury crossover will likely find a following among middle America households, high net worth people who prize luxury, room and technology. Notably, this model is built in middle America at a Nissan plant in Smyrna, Tenn.

Cabin Features

Luxury and technological features abound in the 2013 Infiniti JX. Amenities include: leather trim seating standard across all three rows; 8-way driver and 6-way front passenger power seats; heated front seats with available heated second seats (outboard positions only); Kasane Washi interior trim, available Maple interior accents; leather wrapped shift knob and steering wheel; a moon roof; 8 cupholders and 6 bottle holders; tri-zone climate control; and power windows and door locks.

Technological features include Bluetooth hands-free communication; a 6-speaker audio system with AM/FM/CD; available Bose 13-speaker audio system with an acoustic wave subwoofer; a USB connection port; a navigation system with back up camera and more.

Engine & Transmission

The Infiniti JX may be big, but Nissan chose to utilize a transverse-mounted V-6 to power this vehicle. Of aluminum construction, this 3.5-liter engine produces 265 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 248 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. This engine, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission, utilizes sequential multi-port fuel injection and has a bore of 3.76 inches and a stroke of 3.20 inches, with a 10.3-to-1 compression ratio. Infiniti estimates that FWD and AWD models will achieve 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. With its 19.5 fuel tank cruising range approaches 450 miles. The Infiniti JX runs best when fueld with premium grade gasoline.

JX Dimensions

The JX is of unibody construction and sits on a 114.2-inch wheelbase. This model is 196.4 inches long, 77.2 inches wide and 67.8 inches tall. It offers 6.5 inches of ground clearance and has a 0.34 coefficient of drag, the latter among the lowest for big SUVs.

Inside, the Infiniti JX has 149.8 cubic feet of passenger room and 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row seat.

Headroom dimensions across first, second and third row seats are 40.7, 38.3 and 36.5 inches respectively. Shoulder room is 60.3, 60.4 and 57.1 inches. Hip room is 56.8, 55.8 and 42.0 inches. Leg room is 42.3, 41.7 and 30.8 inches.

Safety Touches

The Infiniti JX employs a full suite of safety features including an advanced airbag system with side curtain airbags; stability and traction control; a tire pressure monitoring system; and front and rear crumble zones. Available with the JX are blind spot warning, blind spot intervention, and backup collision, the latter providing automatic braking when the transmission is engaged in reverse and the crossover nears an object. Lane departure warning, forward collision warning and brake assist are also available.

Will the JX succeed? With its low standard price, cabin features and large interior room, the 2013 Infiniti JX is certainly appealing. Not mentioned was towing capacity, if any, an important attribute for many Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and other full-bodied SUV owners.

Storage behind the second row in the hatchback is 19.0 cubic feet or 30.7 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down.

Anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control and electric steering are among the handling features of the Sonic. This model offers a segment-leading 10 airbags.

Fuel Economy

One of the strong suits of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is its fuel efficiency. The 1.4-liter four is rated at 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and the 1.8-liter engine is rated at 25 or 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway. The Sonic runs on unleaded regular fuel and has a 12.2 gas tank.

Mitsubishi's electric vehicle is outselling the Nissan LEAF.

In 2009, Japanese automaker, Mitsubishi Motors, made history as the first of the mainstream automobile manufacturers to produce all-electric vehicles on a large scale. So far, Mitsubishi Motors has sold over 10,000 electric cars since the release of the original i-MiEV, in 2009. Its nearest competitor is another Japanese automaker, Nissan Motors, who has been quickly catching up with 8,500 units of the electric Nissan Leaf sold since December 2010.

Base i-MieV

With a staunch determination to remain on top of the market, Mitsubishi recently announced the creation of a stripped down, cheaper version of its electric bestseller, the i-MiEV. It will sell for 2.6 million yen, roughly $32,000, which is a little more than half the price of the original version. This cheaper ‘M’ version of the i-MiEV will have a per-charge range of only about 75 miles instead of the original version’s 100 miles.

Besides the cheaper M version, Mitsubishi is also releasing a version of the i-MiEV that will feature a better per-charge range than the original. This higher-end option, the ‘G’ version, will be able to travel up to 110 miles on a single charge. More range, however, means a slightly higher price. The suggested retail price of this G version of Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV has been set at about 3.8 million yen.

EV Options

These two opposing moves being made by the giant automobile manufacturer are aimed at giving their electric brain children a broader range of appeal with consumers in a fledging industry that is becoming increasingly competitive. With three options to choose from, from cheap and short range to slightly more expensive and much longer range, Mitsubishi plans to have something to offer to just about anyone in the market for an electric vehicle.

Buyers of this M version of the i-MiEV will qualify for a hefty subsidy from the Japanese government. This subsidy, designed to encourage and promote electric vehicle use, will bring the price of the car down to about two-thirds of its total cost, from 2.6 million yen to only about 1.88 million. Mitsubishi has pledged to try to keep the cost of the car as low as possible even after the government subsidies stop.

Mitsubishi has projected sales of around 6,000 i-MiEVs in Japan alone in the upcoming business year. Worldwide, they plan to sell a total of about 25,000 of these electric vehicles.

Disaster Relief

The recent earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power crisis in Japan have raised some concerns across the country about cars that run on electricity. During the crisis, however, gasoline was in just as short supply as electricity, and the government ended up borrowing 89 i-MiEVs from Mitsubishi to assist in relief efforts. These cars are apparently still in high demand as they have not yet been returned.

All three major Japanese automakers, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota, have been encouraged by the crisis to research the possibility of placing technology in their electric vehicles that would allow for the transfer of electricity from the car to a home in the case of emergency.

It was written on behalf of a lemon law attorney who decided he wasn’t going to pay me for my work, therefore I have posted it here for your review as is:

Lemon Report — Dodge Magnum

Introduction

Introduced in the fall of 2004 as a 2005 model, the Dodge Magnum was lauded by auto critics for its aggressive demeanor and rakish design. It was snapped up by consumers who were drawn to the car’s power and agility. The sport wagon appeared to be a great combination of a large convenient wagon, with style and flair. However, since its introduction, the Dodge Magnum has had one of the worst consumer complaint ratings of any car currently in production.

Owners are hit hard in the pocket in the form of lengthy stays at repair shops, a plunging resale value, and inopportune failures. Marjorie Atkinson’s 2005 Magnum failed during a vacation, she says, “I was totally burned by my Magnum! My husband and I took our kids on a road trip in July, and the engine failed in the middle of the woods, stranding us with our camper!” This was due to a problem, she later learned, that was well-known to DaimlerChrysler, in which an engine cooling glitch was present which led to fractures in the engine.

Common problems

Some of the top complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration {NHTSA} include:

Intermittent loss of throttle control.

An incorrect engine cooling module that could overheat and cause the engine to crack when the car is fully loaded and approaching maximum towing capacity.

Transmission shudders when torque converter clutch engages.

Shift hesitation during wide open throttle.

Auto transmission fluid contamination.

Passenger airbag disabled lamp light remains lit.

Some of these problems are indicative of 2005 models or 2006 models only. However, costly transmission problems have been reported with both model year vehicles.

This lemon is extra sour! The number of complaints made about the Dodge Magnum to the NHTSA far exceeds the second place car on the list, the Ford GT. Many grievances center on the 2.7L V6 that also powered its predecessor model, the Dodge Intrepid. In May 2006, DaimlerChrysler issued a recall on the Dodge Magnum equipped with this small V6 citing concerns that leaking brake fluid could cause an engine fire! This recall followed several other Magnum recalls including one issued in October 2005 noting that the car could start rolling even when the transmission was in park and the parking brake wasn’t engaged.

Do you have legal rights?

Many Dodge Magnums remain unsafe, some may be undriveable, and more problems with this model are now appearing. If you own a problem Magnum, you have lost confidence in the car and you may be due further remedy. If you want to know whether your Dodge Magnum is protected, and if the law is on your side, do a web search to find out the latest information about recalls and compensation.

Initial quality, low production help.

You only have to go back a few years when the Ford Taurus was a fleet favorite and a cheap used car for people looking for a midsize sedan. 2009 and earlier model year Tauruses seemed to be a dime a dozen; their resale value sunk accordingly.

Limited Production

But, Ford wasn’t about to let past practices dictate what it wanted to gain from the 2010 Ford Taurus, an all-new full-size sedan. Instead of mass producing a car and offering it for fleet duty and thereby killing its resale value, Ford is satisfied with keeping production in line with demand.

The result? A much higher resale value. In fact, Ford sales the 2010 resale value is up by 39 percent over the previous generation 2009 model or $7100. Importantly, the 2010 Taurus has a $2500 premium over the Toyota Avalon, one of its chief competitors.

Resale Values

Resale value isn’t something a lot of consumers think about when buying a new car, but they should. If you plan to keep your car for five years and trade it in for a new model when your time with it is up, you want to get the most for your used car possible. Consumers are often stunned when they learn that their beloved ride isn’t worth all that much, often driven down in price because that model is a fleet favorite.

In addition to limiting production of the 2010 Ford Taurus, the automaker says that the new model also benefits from much higher quality levels.

Initial Quality

Commenting about the Taurus, Steve Ling, manager, Ford North American Car Marketing said, “When you talk about quality, it’s not just ‘Things Gone Wrong’ but ‘Things Gone Right. That’s very important because Things Gone Right are what attract customers to the showroom.” Ling noted that the Taurus ranks highest in the full car segment for initial quality according o the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Initial Quality Study. Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) has given the Taurus similar recognition.

Ford also credits the vehicle’s dashing design and leading-edge technology with helping to keep the value of the Taurus up. SYNC, blind spot information system, and voice activated navigation are among the technologies available with the Ford Taurus.

Indian and Korean automakers to team up.

Mahindra – the India automaker and eventual pickup truck retailer in the U.S. through Global Vehicles (GV) – and Ssangyong – the unpronounceable bottomfeeding car brand in South Korea – are in discussions to allow Mahindra to take a controlling stake in Ssangyong Motor Company.

Chinese Connection

The Korean automaker is bankrupt and no longer under the control of China’s SAIC Motor Corporation and is in need of a suitor to keep its operation going. Mahindra has been identified by as the preferred bidder for Ssangyong with a preliminary agreement expected to be signed by the end of this month. A contract for sale is expected to be signed in November.

Mahindra has been trying to raise its global visibility for several years entering into an agreement in September 2006 with GV to sell its pickup trucks in the United States. However, the reports that GV is suing Mahindra to get the Indian company to follow through on its promise to make its trucks available to GV’s dealer network by the end of 2010. GV alleges Mahindra has breached its contract and is attempting to keep Mahindra from working with another distributor.

In April, Mahindra bought out Renault SA’s stake in an Indian car-making venture. Mahindra trails Tata Motors in the burgeoning home market; the Renault acquisition allows Mahindra to expand its capacity. In May, Mahindra took a 55 percent stake in Reva Electric Car Co., a closely-held Bangalore company in a bid to harness technology for alternative-energy vehicles.

Ugly Rodius

Ssangyong’s strength lies in its distribution network including access to the Russian market as well as its technology. In , The Auto Writer shared details about Ssangyong’s woes and published a picture of the Ssangyong Rodius S, perhaps the ugliest vehicle in the world. Word of advice for Mahindra: work on your styling before exporting anything remotely like the Rodius to the American market. Ugh.

Ssangyong is truly a small time player in the global car market having produced just 43,881 vehicles including 26,190 exports in the first seven months of this year. Mahindra plans to keep Ssangyong separate, to be run by local managers.

Joined at the hip with Fiat AG, the Chrysler Group, LLC has the responsibility for marketing Fiat products in America including the popular Fiat 500 subcompact scheduled to show up stateside before the year is out.

Fiat Experience

But Chrysler has more than enough Chrysler dealers to handle these cars and will be limiting who sells these vehicles. On August 30, Chrysler will be holding and event — Fiat Experience — to outline its Fiat plans with about 600 invited Chrysler dealers. Those dealers, from 41 states and 119 markets will be learn about Chrysler’s plans and be able to apply for the rights to sell Fiats in September with Chrysler deciding by early October who will market the brand.

Even though there are just a few months between dealer acceptance and product launch, Chrysler will not allow dealers to show the Fiat 500 next to Chrysler products with the expectation that as the brand grows dedicated space for Fiat products will be developed.

“The requirements for Fiat are straightforward: separate sales and display at launch, transitioning to a full dealership facility as the volume grows,” said Peter Grady, Chrysler Group’s Vice President of Network Development and Fleet. “Our goal is to establish a retail network appropriately sized to serve the market opportunity.”

No Market

Alaska, Vermont, New Hampshire, South Carolina and the Dakotas are states who will not see Fiat dealerships, at least from the onset. However, with Chrysler actively looking at large metro areas for Fiat, Charlotte covers much of South Carolina while Vermont Fiat lovers can travel to Springfield, MA if they want their Italian ride.

The first Fiat 500 models to be sold stateside are the hatchback, built at Chrysler’s Toluca, Mexico facility. Follow up models will include a convertible and four-door hatchback.

Alfa Romeo

Motor Trends reports that winning Chrysler dealerships may also get the chance to sell the Alfa Romeo brand when it hits the market in 2012 or they may get additional Fiat models if the brand catches on.

In any case, dealers will at least have the Fiat 500 to sell regardless of how things shake out over the coming years, a boutique car some have compared to the MINI Cooper and Volkswagen Beetle, at least in visual appeal.

Invited Chrysler dealers were notified by email on Monday. The invitation came from Grady and Laura Soave, Head of Fiat North America.
