The Perfect People Hauler

My vision of the perfect people hauler is something quite different from the common minivan. Though vehicles like the Dodge Caravan have their place and a car-based SUV like the Toyota Highlander can meet many needs, most of those types of vehicles fail to offer something that is truly elegant, yet distinct.

A few years back when the Cadillac SRX crossover was introduced I was immediately impressed by the vehicle’s style as well as its functionality, a rear wheel drive wagonesque vehicle with an all wheel drive option. Following on the heels of the release of the CTS, I knew that the SRX represented a bold change for Cadillac. Gone were the days when bloated Eldorados and Sedan de Ville’s represented America’s best-selling luxury marque, the SRX was edgy, modern, and thoroughly European — just what the revived Cadillac brand needed.

Styling direction for the next generation SRX comes from the Provoq concept, an edgy design previously showcased at auto shows.

Alas, most vehicles need to be completely updated after five years on the market and my thinking with the SRX is that it wouldn’t make it to its second generation. Not because the SRX is unpopular, rather GM had so many other Cadillac models that needed updating. With the CTS line expanding to include the V-Series, a wagon, and a coupe, and the big DTS and STS at the end of their lifespans, I expected that the SRX would be cast to the side.

The Second Generation Cadillac SRX

Pleasantly, I was surprised to learn a few months ago that the SRX would live on and just today General Motors took the wraps off of the 2010 model, the next generation of its beautiful crossover. The three available photographs demonstrate the angular crispness of the SRX’s lines, distinguishing styling that won’t confuse anyone with other GM brand designs.

For 2010, the SRX has less of a wagon look, but more of a crossover stance. This move works perfectly for Cadillac as the CTS wagon will fill that niche for luxury car buyers.

Two Seats, Not Three

One change GM made with the new SRX is to drop the third row option. Not a very popular offering as it were, the sloping roof line would have made sitting in a third seat miserable had GM figured a way to include it. Still, the SRX offers ample seating for five.

What’s Next For Cadillac?

With the CTS line up finalized and the SRX on the way, attention will be given to the combined replacement for the STS and DTS as well as decision on what to do with the Escalade. With the latter, GM will probably keep making in low volume for several more years, but beyond 2014 I don’t see much demand for an updated model.

As far as the compact BLS goes, the next generation of this European-only model is due out in 2010, but wouldn’t it be nice to see both a coupe (ala BMW 1 Series) and a sedan sold in the US?

  6. speaking of the future midsize suvs, i was thinking that the mazda designers should have one more addition to the cx-9 and cx-7. they should change SOME OF THE FEATURES and keep some the same. i think that would be great for 2010 cars.mazda cx-9 was only through 2007-08 and now they are making a 09. they should just make it only last until 2010 and then should be DONE making them.it should be optional features and INCLUDE nav,tv dvd, roof rails, sunroof, and third row.the cx-9 and cx-7 have not been around for a while and mazda makers will let it last for only 3 years. COME ON. you`ve got to be kidding me. LOL, I MEAN JUST MAKE SOME MORE FOR 2010. MAZDA MAKERS AREN`T DOING SO SO WELL ON YOUR CROSSOVERS. making a 2010 would be like a #1 hit for guys. so make people who love mada`s happy. don`t make them not want a madza anymore. I WOULD REALLY HOPE MY DREAM WOULD COME TRUe 2010. THANKS!
