Nissan Maxima

The 2009 Nissan Maxima has made its debut and is now available at Nissan dealers nationwide. This is the seventh generation of Nissan’s flagship sedan with the automaker claiming that the car has returned to its roots as “The 4-Door Sports Car(TM).” The all-new Maxima features sports styling, a driver-oriented interior and an enhanced 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine (290-horsepower/261 lb-ft of torque) with an EPA estimated 19 mpg City/26 mpg Highway mileage a slight improvement over the previous model.

The Nissan Maxima is offered in two models, the Maxima 3.5 S and the Maxima 3.5 SV, each one equipped with the standard 3.5-liter V6 and intelligent Xtronic CVT(TM) (Continuously Variable Transmission). Prices are definitely in the luxury car range, starting at an MSRP of $29,290 for the Maxima 3.5 S and $31,990 for the Maxima 3.5 SV.

“The 2009 Maxima 3.5 S features an increase in standard equipment, horsepower and style, combined with better fuel economy, yet remains very competitively priced with nearly $400 more value than the 2008 Maxima 3.5 SE,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “As the flagship of Nissan’s exciting 2009 lineup, this new Maxima sets the standard in every category, including value.”

Several new option packages are available for this year, including a Sport Package (3.5 SV), featuring sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, premium leather-appointed seats, paddle shifters and more. The Premium Package comes with dual panel moonroof, 7-inch color monitor with RearView Monitor, Eucalyptus wood-tone trim and more.

Nissan says that the Maxima’s interior design team developed an interior concept of “Super Cockpit” to give the feeling of a sports car with controls ergonomically close, yet with ample roominess and comfort for both driver and passengers. The interior includes a special driver’s sport seat, available leather-appointed seating, offset shifter lever that is closer to the driver, “Daylight Illumination” gauges and a wide range of available technology, including a Bose(R) audio system, RearView Monitor and Nissan Hard Drive Navigation system with XM NavTraffic(R) real-time traffic information (active XM(R) subscription required, sold separately), Voice Recognition and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive.

Most definitely, the price for the Maxima is up there, but still a full ten grand less than the Infiniti M35, the model closest in size to the Maxima. For automotive buffs, the Datsun 810 was the forerunner to the Maxima, the first 810 coming stateside way back in 1977.
