Because of the dearth of ethanol producing plants in the USA, a New York Company — Xethanol — is planning on building a cellulosic ethanol plant in Augusta, GA. The plant is expected to come online in the Summer of 2007 and will produce as much as 50 million gallons of ethanol per year. This news comes via a report published in an Atlanta newspaper.

Xethanol [trading as XNL on the American Stock Exchange] will be using a variety of feedstocks to produce ethanol. The plant is expected to later have the ability to produce to biodiesel as well.

With gas prices averaging more than $3 per gallon, this additional capacity is certainly to be welcomed by motorists who currently drive vehicles capable of running on ethanol but are having a difficult time finding the fuel.

In related news, a Texas company has also announced that they will be breaking ground on an ethanol plant capable of producing 100 million gallons of fuel annually.
